Online Poker: A history

Poker has been around for centuries now, and is enjoyed by people from all walks of life. You can see the rich celebrities display their poker skills on television, and more common people play poker at office break time or during family functions. Truly, it has been a phenomenon, but another phenomenon has been emerging these past few years - a phenomenon by the name of online poker.

Just when did online poker begin? The first online poker room, Planet Poker, was put up in 1998. For a short period of time, it was the only online poker room available. Years passed, and it was being replaced by other online poker rooms. However, it's structure was adapted by the other online poker rooms, and it is still being used until now.

In 1999, Poker Paradise became the leader in online poker gaming. In 2000, Poker Spot emerged. Poker Spot was the first to hold tournaments. It seemed like a promising idea. However, they encountered many problems. One of which was they were unable to collect the player deposits, and in turn could not pay the winnings of the players.

This kind of trouble has never happened again, thanks to e-cash. In 2001, Poker Stars and Poker Party entered the industry and became the two leading online poker rooms of that time. To market their service, these poker rooms soon invested in advertising. However, it was proven that a success story in online poker is the most effective advertisement. When people learned that they could make as much money in online poker as they could have in live poker games, people started to take interest in online poker.

In 2003, www.pokertips.org was launched to help online poker and poker beginners and players. In 2004, the online poker industry boomed. More poker rooms emerged such as Full Tilt Poker and Noble Poker.

Online poker is just at its forming stage. Everyday, improvements are being made to achieve excellence. The industry is facing a bright future. However, online poker rooms are not telling you to not play live poker ever again. They are just offering an alternative. It is obvious that there are still certain things that live poker can bring that online poker cannot. It is hard to say which is better than the other. I guess it boils down to what suits you as a player. Surely, online poker is here to stay and will continue on making waves in the history of poker.
